מחקר חלוץ על יעילות ACT פורסם בשנת – 1986 ומאז נערכו כ- 325 מחקרים על תרפיית קבלה ומחויבות אך לא כולם עמדו בכל התבחינים המחמירים של מערך מחקר אמפירי מוקפד ושיטתי המאפשר הסקת מסקנות לגבי יעילותו. במטא-אנליזה אשר התבססה על 133 מחקרים מוקפדים ומתוקפים על יעילות הטיפול ב-ACT (האפקט הטיפולי שלו, ללא התערבויות נוספות) בקרב 12,477 משתתפים בין השנים 1986 ל-2018, הוכחה יעילותו באופן מובהק בדומה ל- CBT "קלאסי", הכוונה היא ל – CBT גל שני. במטא אנליזה זו, בחנו את יעילותו במקרים של דיכאון, חרדה, התמכרויות, כאב כרוני ומטופלים ללא תיוג / אבחון פסיכיאטרי.
במטא – אנליזה אשר התבססה על 14 מחקרים העומדים בתבחין של ניסוי עם הקצאה אקראית מבוקרת RCT בקרב 1189 ילדים ונוער בין השנים 2009 עד 2017 הוכחה יעילותו של ACT בדומה ל – CBT "קלאסי". במחקרים אלו, בחנו את יעילותה של תרפיית קבלה ומחויבות במקרים של דיכאון, חרדה ובעיות התנהגות. ניכר הצורך לבסס את גוף הידע האמפירי על ACT בקרב ילדים ומתבגרים מתחת לגיל 18, במחקרים מתוקפים נוספים.
